July’s Soldier of Fortune drops in for the most daring raid of all - introducing Augustus Newman VC!
A Lieutenant-Colonel attached to No. 2 Commando, Newman would find himself commanding the ground forces of Operation Chariot on 28th March 1942. This was a raid of frankly astonishing audacity, in which a small force of British Commandos would sail into the German-occupied port of St. Nazaire in an old destroyer and small flotilla of motorboats. The objective was to knock out crucial drydock infrastructure, in order to prevent the German battleship Tirpitz from using the port.
To accomplish this, the old destroyer HMS Campbeltown was modified to resemble a German vessel… then packed with an enormous explosive charge, and rammed directly into the drydock gates! At the same time, the Commandos stormed ashore, with Newman one of the first to land. Demolition teams fanned out, targeting vital systems, while the rest of the troops held off fierce German counterattacks.
Under Newman’s command, the demolition teams were protected for long enough to accomplish their mission, and although Newman and his men would eventually be forced to surrender, they held out until the very last round, and allowed much of the rest of the force to evacuate. Later that day, Campbeltown blew up spectacularly, knocking out the drydock and achieving the primary objective. Newman would spend the rest of the war as a prisoner, but this action would see him win the Victoria Cross - Britain’s highest military honour.
Our Soldier of Fortune figure depicts Newman leading his men into the thick of the action, Thompson gun in hand. Wearing the trademark Commando cap comforter, he’s a fantastic addition to any British collection, where he can serve in any number of Commando units from Armies of Great Britain.
Newman VC is a man on a very daring mission, and he can’t stick around long! He’ll only be available for the month of July, after which time he’ll have to reluctantly lay down his empty gun and march into captivity, not to be seen again for many years.
